With the flack that Madonna received about her Met Gala outfit, I’m not sure the concept of “dressing your age” is something I can really get behind. Dress for the occasion, of course. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have, no brainer. But telling women of any age they are too young or too old to wear something they love seems like we’re going back in time. Here are six ageless style tips anybody of any age should follow.
1. Get a good tailor.
Clothes look best when they fit best. You’d be amazed how a well-fitting outfit can change your life. Always find time to get those jeans hemmed. There are many places like Uniqlo that will hem pants for you. You can even request this option when ordering online. Just make sure you have someone with knowledge to measure your inseam.
2. Invest in the basics.
Check out my suggestions on essential pieces to building a wardrobe. Never underestimate the power of the perfect white tee.
3. Splurge on shoes.
Just do it, you know you want to. You’ll feel like a thousand bucks and confidence is priceless. You work hard, buy the shoes. One of my most visited posts is 8 Shoe Styles Every Woman Needs in Her Closet. Hopefully, it will help you too!
4. Sunglasses you never want to take off.
Whatever the outfit, show your style with a pair of sunglasses all your own. They can add an unexpected edge and protect your eyes and sensitive skin from the sun. Also, not a style tip, but wear sunscreen, you will not regret it. Read more about sunnies in my post, Choosing the Right Sunglasses for Your Face Shape.
5. Treat your favorite pair of jeans with respect.
You know which ones I’m talking about and never let them go. They may be hand-me-downs, the jeans you weren’t sure you should get or your biggest designer purchase, but either way, you love those jeans. I’ve shared more in my post 5 Must-Have Jean Styles to Rock Your Wardrobe.
6. Follow your gut.
The only person who should care about what you’re wearing is you. If you love it, wear it. Allow Yourself to be a Fashion Rebel and Let the World Inspire You Rather Than Transform You!
Don’t listen to those nay-sayers when it comes to fashion. Wear whatever you love and what you feel good in! I do this daily and I’m over 50, just like Madonna. My comment to her is “You go, girl!”
