Why did I become a capsule wardrobe stylist? I had a little help from a friend.
One day I was having a conversation with my girlfriend over a glass of wine (or two) and she asked me a funny question. She said, “Why is it that you always manage to look stylish even when you’re wearing jeans and a t-shirt?” That question seriously floored me. I had really never thought of myself as stylish. I ran a fashion and lifestyle online magazine, but I was always SUPER stressed out when I had to find something to wear to an event. Seriously stressed out. I mean, I would go to my favorite boutiques and literally have an anxiety attack.
Anxiety Attack!
That was when it started to click. I had to make some major changes in order to stay sane. I had to change the way I thought about what I put on my body, not just daily, but for major events as well. Once I had this complete mind-shift to a capsule wardrobe, my life changed.
So the question my girlfriend asked me and the conversation that followed made me realize that I could teach others how to make this same mind-shift.
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothes or pieces that can be styled in different combos to create a variety of outfits for different occasions. Based on the theme or style inspiration that you’re going for, your capsule wardrobe will contain classic and essential pieces that will represent your style while still being able to create a ton of different outfits that don’t seem repetitive. Capsule wardrobes are the best way to minimize your clothes into a smaller collection that is easier to mix and match.
So why are capsule wardrobes so beneficial?
For me, a capsule wardrobe saves me money, time, stress, maintenance and more! By choosing a selection of clothes for the fall/winter and spring/summer, I’m saving myself the headache of shopping for temporary trends and the bitterness of parting with my treasured cash.
Every single one of us, at some point, has gone through the struggle of opening the closet door in the morning and having absolutely no idea what to wear. The laundry is done and all your clothes are ready for wear but you still feel like you never have quite the right outfit. With a capsule wardrobe, a minimalist approach to your wardrobe equals a more organized closet.
I mean let’s be honest, we’ve all bought those clothing items that we loved in the store but they end up in the back of the closet because they are rarely worn. With a capsule wardrobe, you have really versatile pieces that you actually love to wear at any given moment or to any event. Whether it’s Sunday brunch or a job meeting, you’ll never feel like you don’t have anything to wear.
Instead of filling my closet with trendy pieces that I wear for one event or one season, I now only own clothes that I can mix and match into multiple outfits for any occasion.
Recently I was reading an article on Curious Mind Magazine entitled The Science of Simplicity: Why Successful People Wear the Same Thing Every Day. This article hit on many of the benefits I’m experiencing with this mental mindshift. While reading that article, I clicked through to another article written by Drew Barrymore for Refinery 21, Why I Put My Closet on a Diet (in 6 Simple Steps). WOW! I knew Drew was my sister from another mother.
I want an outfit I won’t question. I don’t want to be out midday having an insecure “I wish I could go home and change” moment. – Drew Barrymore
